ABSTRACT
The
study investigates information Technology and its future in Nigeria secondary
schools and ultimately how it positively affects the educational system.
The
investigation was firmly tooted in the prevailing concepts in the computer
terrain as espoused by the review of the related literature which established
computer as basic information Technology process with its high importance as a
communication tool in the modern society.
The
study also touched on social function of computer and its uses in some
professional setting and educational environment. It will make them
independence and self reliance.
It
will gather from the questionnaire administered that the use of computer as an
additional supporting instructional material will boost the achievement of
educational objectives, thereby making the study favorably disposed towards the
sources of the teaching as this will help them to retain the subject over a
long period of time
Having
recognized that information is making the world a global village, Government,
Parents Teachers association, and teachers should see it is development in our
schools as this research has helped to point out the importance of computer for
teaching and learning in Nigeria schools.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
to the Study
Information
and Communication Technologies (ICT) are electronic technologies used for
information storage and retrieval. Development is partly determined by the
ability to establish a synergistic interaction between technological innovation
and human values. The rapid rate at which ICTs have evolved since the mid-20th
century, the convergence and pervasiveness of ICTs, give them a strong role in
development and globalization. The field of education has been affected by
ICTs, which have undoubtedly affected teaching, learning, and research. ICTs
have the potential to accelerate, enrich, and deepen skills, to motivate and
engage students, to help relate school experience to work practices, create
economic viability for tomorrow's workers, as well as strengthening teaching
and helping schools change (Davis and Tearle, 2010; Yusuf, 2011). In a rapidly
changing world, computer education is essential for an individual to be able to
access and apply information. The Economic Commission for Africa has indicated
that the ability to access and use information is no longer a luxury, but a
necessity for development. Unfortunately, many developing counties, especially
in Africa, are still backward in ICT application and use (AduwaOgiegbean and
Iyamu, 2008).This paper focuses on ICT use in Nigerian schools, it particularly
dwells on the importance of ICT and the causes of low levels of ICT use in
Nigerian schools as well as provides recommendations.
Today, we live in a world of technology. Information Management cannot be realistically
done without technological backup. Information technology, also known as I.T
happens to be a recent event in the field of computer science, it has to do
with application of computer knowledge to solve immediate problem. To be in
good shape for your business, you must be well informed on that business and
information technology is the tool to be used, because of this, we cannot do
without information technology in every business we find ourselves, either the
business of education as a teacher or others. Information technology has been
defined as "cultural traditions developed in human community for dealing
with the physical and biological environment". These cultural traditions
include bodies of knowledge, skills and procedures for making, using and doing
things.
A cultural tradition varies from community to community and from country
to country. They range from the predominantly manual processes of the
underdeveloped to the highly mechanized process of the developed communities or
countries. Technology contributes greatly to the socio-economic development of
the differences in their economies. Technology is developed and not necessarily
transferred, hence people develop technology when they improve their knowledge,
skills and procedures for making, using and doing things. Technology
advancement/development of cultural traditions can also be defined as the art
of "knowing how" as applied to an actual technique such as
agriculture or engineering. Invention and innovation are two crucial factors in
technology. Invention is the process of creative imagination resulting in
practical application of scientific discovery, scientific thoughts and
discovery lead to inventive instincts. These instincts are translated into
concrete objects and things. Innovation is the process by which new products
are produced in science, technology and arts.
Man studies the community's needs, the nature
and properties of materials within the environment, and with this, knowledge
and skills, designs, processes and methods to satisfy the needs of the
community and also to improve methods of making or doing things are innovated.
Products of technology have brought positive changes into our society. The
technology we have today in Nigeria did not appear over night, they went through
decades of refinement. They are products of years of hard work, dedication,
patience, efforts and discipline. A country that is well or highly developed
technologically makes maximum use of its gift for the benefit of its people.
Since nature has given every country some natural resources and the extent to
which each country utilizes the gift of nature depends upon the counties
technology, a country which cannot make adequate use of its technology cannot utilize
its resources well. He will sell its raw materials at a lower price to
developed countries and buy the end product at an exorbitant price from the
same people who bought the raw materials.
Magaret Bell (2015) predicted that “The
world will soon have the technological means to automate all management
decisions, whether programmed or not, through management science and heuristic
programming". Impact of the computer and the course of development in
management information system is such that people have been very optimistic
that technological changes will continue to occur from time to time. Leavitt
and whister (20013) foresaw and predicted that the new technology would
generate these effects; There would be a return to re-centralization as opposed
to the then decentralization trend because of the centralized control of
economics as encouraged by computer science. The boundary between planning and
operations would move upwards and the need for management science techniques
and I.T, the assumed demarcation between top and middle management would be clearer
than before because of the programming of many types of decision as made by
middle management, a good educational system creates a sound base for the
development of technology which is comprehensive and technology oriented. It
enables people to make use of both their brains and to acquire suitable
knowledge and skills to design and produce methods and processes that will
enable them to make maximum use of their resources for the benefit of the
society at large. The numerous advantages of Information Technology includes Protecting
and storing information, Automated processes, Communication, Remote access
while some of the disadvantages of information technology includes; Expense on
implementation and maintenance, elimination of jobs and breaches in security.
1.2 Statement
of the Problem
The research is to investigate
the effectiveness of Information Technology in Nigerian secondary schools especially
in Eredo Local Council Development Area of Lagos state and how it affects
teaching and learning process and it future performance on students academic
processes.
1.3 Purpose
of the Study
The purpose of this study is that the teaching and learning of other
subjects heavily depends on computer science and its associated technology.
Long distance learning, electronic correspondence learning system,
tele-conferencing, computer assisted instruction and computer managed
instruction among others are all by-projects of this new technology. It is
hoped that the findings of this study will throw light on the role of computer
in Nigerian secondary schools.
1.4 Research
Questions
(1)
Is it possible to computerize the system of education in Nigerian secondary
schools?
(2) Will the introduction of computer be
welcomed by the teachers/school administrators?
(3) Can the introduction of computer
into secondary school affect teaching positively?
(4) Will the introduction of computer
affect learning positively?
(5) Who should bear the cost of
introduction of computers into secondary schools?
1.5 Research
Hypotheses
H0: There is no significant relationship
between Information Technology and the future of Nigeria Secondary Schools
Ha: There
is significant relationship between Information Technology and the future of
Nigeria Secondary Schools
1.6
Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will reveal the
extent to which computer is used in the learning process. Also, the findings of
this study will reveal effectiveness of information technology in Nigerian
secondary schools as it affects the learning and teaching process and
recognition, making the message more memorable and creating more
awareness. The study also seek to enrich
the existing body of knowledge and skills on the assumed relationship with the
information technology drawn from it becoming a thing of value to the
interested parties in their decision-making on related matters.
1.7 Limitations
of the Study
The study is limited to Eredo Local Council Development area(L.C.D.A) in
Lagos state due to finance and time constraints.
More
so, it would be impossible to evaluate the overall sincerity of respondent
answers to the questionnaires, since the response of respondents may be
influenced by changes in the learning process in the educational system during
the cause of the study which in effect will affect the respondent choice.
